About Carnoustie

Golf was recorded in the Carnoustie parish records in 1560. Allan Robertson laid out the first 10 holes, Old Tom Morris extended it to 18 in 1867, and James Braid's 1926 changes set up the course for its first Open in 1931.

Ben Hogan won here in 1953 in his only Open appearance, and the par-5 6th is now called Hogan's Alley. In 1999 Jean van de Velde came to the 72nd hole needing a double-bogey 6 to win, hit the grandstand, found the Barry Burn, and made 7. Paul Lawrie won the playoff.

What stands out

  • The Barry Burn crosses the 10th, fronts the 16th green, loops through the 17th, and runs in front of the 18th green.
  • The 16th is a 245-yard par 3 from the back.
  • Hogan's Alley, the par-5 6th, threads between bunkers and out of bounds.
